Each month at our meetings, we provide the opportunity for one of our members to showcase his or her work, and to talk about the process of creating the work we view. Here are excerpts of the videos we watch along with a videographer (or filmmaker) interview.
July 2011 Bryan and Nikki Powers, Hindsight Wedding Films
Do you prefer ‘videographer’ or ‘filmmaker’? Cinematographer is probably a better word for what we do. Videographer doesn’t offend me though.
What are your specialties? We are a husband/wife team. We find that the combination of the male AND female perspective before (getting to know the couple), during (filming the day) and after (the editing) the wedding day brings a more balanced and thorough approach to capturing the day. We also consider capturing the audio of the day(vows, toasts, interviews, ambience, etc.) just as important as capturing the video.
How long have you been a videographer/filmmaker? Long before I realized that’s what it was called. I officially put a label on it in 2004.
Why did you choose videography as a career? It chose me. I was kicked me out of my comfort zone when my sales job was eliminated many years ago. It was at that time that I realized that video is part of who I am rather than just something I do.
What do you like best about what you do? I get to spend a lot more time with my children and I get to work with my wife who also happens to be my best friend. Closely behind that would be the opportunity to see someone completely change their mind about the importance of a wedding video. It’s also wonderful to be able to excercise my God given creativity on a daily basis.
What advice do you have for people looking for a wedding /corporate videographer? Not all videography is created equal. Choose the professional that is a right fit for you both artistically and personally. Consider the value of seeing AND hearing your wedding day as part of your anniversary celebration and the value of revisiting your vows throughout your marriage. It’s a wonderful gift to give yourselves and future generations.
